Promotion of Participatory and Accountable Local Governance in Tanintharyi Region
VNG/European Union, Tanintharyi Region, February 2015 – January 2018

Overall objective:
To support the development of participatory and accountable local governance in Myanmar

Specific objectives:

  • Enhancing the capacities of local authorities of Tanintharyi Region (TR) in participatory development planning and accountable financial management processes
  • Strengthening active engagement and dialogue between LAs, local civil society (including women and youth) and business associations in ways that foster public participation, transparency, accountability and communication
  • Promoting in-country knowledge of and support for participatory and accountable local governance through development and dissemination of sustainable and innovative models, tools, research and resource materials

Expected results:

  • Enhanced capacity of LAs in public and municipal administration, participatory development planning and accountable financial management; 2 functioning training centers and mobile training initiated; linkages strengthened with other LAs
  • Increased shared understanding, improved capacity and stronger cooperation between LAs, CSOs and business associations (including women and youth) in participatory and accountable local governance; enhanced capacity and implementation of accountability and transparency mechanisms; improved communication/information between LAs, key stakeholders and the public
  • Training materials, research and publications on participatory local governance developed and accessible; local trainers capable of conducting trainings in good local governance; enhanced support for participatory local governance and accountable local democracy in Myanmar

Legal Education, Advocacy, and Participation (LEAP) in Mon
USAID, Mon State, January 2015 – March 2016

Overall objective:
Increased legal literacy, access to justice and participation of marginalized populations in legal processes

Specific objectives:

  • People have more knowledge of the law and how to access the justice system in Mon state
  • People are active in public policy dialogues related to Rule of Law reform, human rights, and access to justice in targeted regions/ states

Expected results:

  • Participants, their friends, families, and communities, have greater knowledge of the law and their human rights
  • Local people are part of informal networks that engage with and advocate for Rule of Law support and reform
  • Local people can access information about justice systems and support
  • Local people can express their grievances and influence rule of law reform
  • Government and law enforcement officials have ownership of legal reform and evidence to support this

Seeds to Strength: Improving Seed Quality and Strengthening Farmers’ Capacities
Norwegian Church Aid/Kadoorie Charitable Foundation, April 2012 – April 2015, Bogalay

Objectives:

  • Farmer Field School (FFS) participants apply and share new knowledge and skills about improved agricultural tools and methods
  • Paddy rice farming households have access to tangible inputs required to increase per acre paddy yield
  • Farmers’ capacity strengthened to manage their farm activities with available resources

Burma Civil Society Strengthening Programme
British Council/DFiD, January 2013 – December 2015. Yangon and Loka Ahlinn regional offices
Loka Ahlinn are an implementing partner in this project that aims to enable more people in Burma – particularly the poor – to take more control over decisions that affect their lives by investing in local organisations so they can act cooperatively to address the needs and aspirations of Burmese people.

Objectives:

  • National CSOs develop a stronger shared understanding of issues relevant to them and their constituents
  • Organisations supported by the project engage in collective action around agreed issues, yielding tangible results and building horizontal and vertical linkages between organisations and individuals
  • National organisations equipped with the skills and strategies to build capacity for constructive social change

Citizen Advocate Centre Project
People in Need, January 2014 – December 2014, Mandalay

Objective:
To create an open space for active citizenship and an opportunity for CSOs to mobilize community members and provide these communities with access to information and training on civic concepts, community development, skills for leadership and any other relevant topics and activities leading to more active civil society actors aware of their rights and responsibilities, aware of human rights and with knowledge and capacity to monitor and document HR violations.

Specific objectives:

  • To provide an open space for community members who are interested in community development and civil society organisations around their network to learn and share development related information and resources
  • To equip practical knowledge on civic education, right based approach development, advocacy management and community management to promote deeper and wider understanding among civil society actors about civil and political rights and protect and promote their rights
